Ven a mi, y no te vayas.

22.10.14

Me miró.

Quería salir corriendo y experimentar el viento;
sentir al padre sol quemar la lluvia;

A todos nos gusta el engaño;
nos gusta encarar a la encrucijada que nos da el poder;

Duele. Sangra.

A veces no.

Huele a mar. Huele a tierra.

El porvenir,
insisto,

Sí;
estoy insinuando que todo lo que habita al Universo es hermoso;
y que lo único que realmente habita es el porvenir;
y que habitar al universo no es vivir la vida nada más;
un corazón y el otro;
entre pum pum y pum pum.

La vida es eso;

Una mujer hermosa que se esconde entre sus labios y sus quéhaceres;
una tal por cual y una reina;
una habitación y una oficina llena de burócratas;

Confieso.

Statement from Michigan Womyn’s Music Festival August 18, 2014

Because I love Michfest. Because I love Womyn. Because I believe Transwomyn ARE Womyn. Because we need space to be Womyn. Defend. Resist. Share.

"Many demands have been made of the Michigan Womyn’s Music Festival (“Michfest”) via the Equality Michigan call for a boycott launched July 28, 2014. We have a few demands of our own.

1. Get Your Facts Straight
As the 39th Festival closes and we turn our hearts and minds to our landmark 40th anniversary, we reiterate that Michfest recognizes trans womyn as womyn - and they are our sisters. We do not fear their presence among us, a false claim repeatedly made. What we resist – and what we will never stop fighting – is the continued erasure and disrespect for the specific experience of being born and living as female in a patriarchal, misogynist world.

Over 20 years ago, we asked Nancy Burkholder, a trans womon, to leave the Land. That was wrong, and for that, we are sorry. We, alongside the rest of the LGBTQ community, have learned and changed a great deal over our 39-year history. We speak to you now in 2014 after two decades of evolution; an evolution grown from our willingness to stay in hard conversations, just as we do every year around issues of race, ability, class and gender. Since that single incident, Festival organizers have never asked a trans womyn to leave the Festival. We have a radical commitment to creating a space where for one week a year, no one's gender is questioned - it's one of the most unique and valued aspects of the Festival. The Michfest community has always been populated by womyn who bear the burden of unwanted gender scrutiny every day.

The truth is, trans womyn and trans men attend the Festival, blog about their experiences, and work on crew. Again, it is not the inclusion of trans womyn at Festival that we resist; it is the erasure of the specificity of female experience in the discussion of about the space itself that stifles progress in this conversation. As long as those who boycott and threaten Michfest do not acknowledge the reasons why the space was created in the first place, and has remained vital for four decades, the conversation remains deadlocked.

2. Acknowledge the Validity of Autonomous, Female-Defined Space
Michfest is widely known as a predominantly lesbian community. This does not mean that heterosexual womyn, bisexual womyn, or those who do not share this identity are not present or welcome. But for a week, we collectively experience a lesbian-centered world; we experience what it feels like to be in a community defined by lesbian culture.

There are trans womyn and trans men who attend and work at the Festival who participate in the Michfest community in this same spirit – as supporters of, rather than detractors from, our female-focused culture. The presence of trans womyn at Michfest has been misrepresented as a kind of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” But the real issue is about the focus of the event, a focus on the experience of those born female, who’ve lived their lives subjected to oppression based on the sole fact of their being female.

In an August 4, 2014 article titled “What Is a Woman: The Dispute Between Radical Feminism and Transgenderism,” The New Yorker magazine documents the extremism of the current push for language that erases the female experience. The board of the New York Abortion Access Fund, for example, “voted unanimously to stop using the word ‘women’ when talking about people who get pregnant. A Change.org petition directed at NARAL and Planned Parenthood “specifically criticizes the hash tag #StandWithTexasWomen. . .and the phrase ‘Trust Women.’”

We see this same pressure for erasure of a specifically female reality when “Pussy Manifesto,” the female empowerment song written by the performers Bitch and Animal, now embraced as an unofficial Michfest anthem, is disparaged by some as transphobic – as was the event “A Night of A Thousand Vaginas” – solely for the use of the words vagina and pussy.

If it is considered transphobic to talk about our pussies, our vaginas, or to even use the word female as specific to sex, our movement is dangerously close to using the same tactics as the far right, womyn hating, Michigan Republican leadership, who revoked the speaking privileges of two female legislators for saying the word vagina out loud on the Michigan State House floor. What has our movement come to when the mere articulation of your own experience in your own female body is denounced as an injury to another? It’s time to examine the core issue here, which is our right to create an autonomous space focused on a female-defined experience.

3. Acknowledge That Michfest Creates Spaces That Do Not Exist Elsewhere
This year, thousands of womyn and girls from 3 weeks to 92 years old attended our 39th Festival. This included over 75 deaf womyn who came to rejuvenate and be in community. Nearly 200 womyn with disabilities came into the woods to thrive. At one of the workshops held this year, young womyn stated that until they came to Festival, they had never seen an old gender-non-conforming female in person; they did not know that those womyn existed. We built this space to let these womyn be seen and celebrated. We built this space around the fierce solidarity of female experience that has always been and continues to be deconstructed into invisibility; where that unique experience is relegated to a place of dishonor. Whenever females honor ourselves, wherever we take up space, and sit collectively in the source of our collective power, we are burned and stoned, both literally and metaphorically.

4. Turn Your Energy Towards the Real Enemies of Female and LGBTQ Liberation
While the abuse and disenfranchisement of womyn and girls escalates around the world and LGBTQ people experience life-threatening harms, LGBTQ organizations have turned inwards on a curious target – a weeklong music festival that does not ban or exclude anyone, that simply seeks to devote its focus to an experience that is denigrated in the larger world: the experience of being born and living as female.

Equality Michigan and the organizations endorsing its petition including HRC, the Task Force, NCLR and the National Black Justice Coalition, are targeting Michfest with McCarthy-era blacklist tactics. Specifically, they have called for attendees and artists to boycott the event, and – astonishingly – have threatened the livelihood of artists and vendors by branding those who participate in the Festival as “having committed anti-transgender discrimination.”

These organizations are targeting artists who perform at Michfest while remaining completely silent when queer-identified artists play at venues that generate profits for racist, transphobic, and homophobic corporate entities and individuals, whose interests are dangerous to the global LGBTQ movement and all basic human rights.

We call on the constituents, donors, and dues-paying members of the LGBTQ institutions targeting Michfest to hold them accountable for this misuse and misdirection of organizational resources, and to withdraw their time and dollars from these organizations until the targeting of Michfest ends. Sisters - we urge you to redirect your money to organizations that speak to your lives and speak for you.

5. Join the Conversation, Not the Digital Sound Bite War
Our community is strong enough to hold disagreement and to engage deeply with each other, face-to-face, through difficulty. The Michfest community welcomes conversation; we do not stifle it. We have and will continue to remain in community with those trans womyn for whom Michfest has been home; trans womyn like those organizing the New Narratives Conference who do not require females to disappear ourselves or our unique experiences to prove our political and social solidarity.

Michfest has always existed outside the gender binary. We built this city out of a radical diversity of age, culture, race, class and gender. We continue the revolutionary work of digging out from under the boot of patriarchy; a system of oppression so omnipresent, it is invisible in the analysis used by the very organizations who are supposed to be fighting alongside and for us. We are fierce allies to and members of the trans and broader LGBTQ movement – but our alliance cannot and will not be premised on our continued erasure.

We turn to our LGBTQ community and say: we hear your truths; we ask you to acknowledge that you hear ours. Listen to the voices of the tens of thousands of women who call Michfest home. Join the conversation in person in your home communities, not exclusively through social media platforms or online petitions. We invite our sisters to participate in this conversation in person on the Land. Make room in your heart to hold difference of opinion and disagreement – this is the challenging path to honoring true diversity. We turn to our LGBTQ community and ask you to unite with us in the belief that we can work together as a movement and stand together in solidarity. We ask you to work with us, not against us."

Tracking the Future

Without really knowing, during my last trip to Chicago, I found tracks of the future. Friday morning. I started the drive with half a tank of gas and the mission of arriving on time to the Howard Brown Center in Chicago (122 miles away). Beautiful sunrise: the Midwest.

electric charger
My first stop was at a Seven Eleven somewhere between Indiana and Illinois. Nature made her second call with a cool morning shower that only helped us to get dirty. I found there the first electric charging station I’ve ever seen in real life. Eleven gasoline pumps; 5 diesel pumps, and one electric charger. The future is slow but determine.

After my appointment with Joe, a blue eye, long beard, heavily inked in black nurse, I went to break the fast. It is difficult to decide where to eat in a big city like Chicago; there are so many options and so many opinions. So I simply did a google search from my phone “best diners Chicago” and I chose the one that was within a 3 mile distance: The Chicago Diner. To my surprise the first word I saw written in their menu was “Sustainability”. Is the universe trying to play games with me? Is the universe remanding me that I need to do my homework?—I thought.  “Featuring local, seasonal ingredients and produce. Eco-friendly cleaning products. Bio-degradable to-go containers. Bio-diesel conversion of waste oil. FSC and Rainforest Alliance certified office paper”. Meat free. The future seemed to be planing my breakfast. I went on reading, “Logan Square location also features: US Green Building Council LEED Gold certification. High efficiency equipment and appliances. Recycled building materials, low landfill impact. Reclaimed wood for doors, bartop and other fixtures”. Impressive. I gotta say those were the best organic, free range, non-GMO, gluten free, local, green, chilaquiles I have ever tried (and I am Mexican so that is something!).

Before hitting home, me and my partner stopped at IKEA to get some small things. Surprise! what do you see as soon as the electric doors allow you to enter? A huge picture of what it looks like an infinite solar panel farm. What is it? The roof. IKEA has made the commitment to respect nature, work together with nature, make profit without destroying nature and supporting sustainable development that secures the future of the next generations. Being solar energized is just one piece of their commitment. While walking through the store-maze you can find other informative posters about their efforts to move towards the future. The most surprising to me was a display of videos teaching shoppers why LED lighting is better than anything we have invented today. The videos are good, but the fact that you can buy LED light bulbs for 4 dollars is even better!

I guess most people go about days like this one without paying attention to such details. Their immediate thoughts and worries might be more relevant. But I also imagine that some people chase these tracks, engage with them and follow them. Personally, I want to be a follower of this kind of future; I want to build it and celebrate it.

yoko and me
I arrived home late and tired of driving under the rain and between the heavy traffic of the big city. I noticed it did not rain here, and our vegetable garden was complaining. After opening the drip irrigation system, Yoko, my best friend, looked at me with those eyes nature has (similar to Joe’s blue eyes). He wanted to get his exercise, his discipline, his affection. Nature has no mystery. We just complicate things.

For a sustainable future, I wish you many days like this one.

Because life is about knowing...

I sit here, listening, while smelling flowers I have never seen before;
learning how ants become helpers,
   how butterflies become lovers;
   how herbs become healers.

Because life is about your eyes and instincts;
   about laughing of the silence, of the unfirtunate truth;
      of the fact that tomorrow will never happen.

My sweet companion, my sweet friend...
You may not know that you are my teacher while I am your guide, your gurdian, your lead.

Because life is about sharing;
    I share with you this life, this moment of realization...

Lets continue walking, learning life.

Porque puedo...

Puedo decidir estar triste.

Casi siempre me arrepiento.

tú, me molestas (mucho).

reading...

Don't let them; just don't let them tell you what to do. It is that simple; promise. Telling them will make you free. Yes, you have to tell it to yourself too. You also have to believe that what you tell is more than true. True true. It is true. Don't let them tell you. You tell them first!

Parking lot

16.2.14

Uncertainty

I am not absolutely sure, and I will never be, but still I feel like saying things about the things I know. Somehow the feelings I feel give me a kind of certainty that I should talk, that I should share them and use them to instigate something. I have never received feedback, but I continue doing this. It is like if I am train to do it even if I am not getting the reinforcement. I dunno what I am talking about, but I feel like continue talking.

I want to write about writing a blog post trigger by the deep wish of writing words that connect to something. Amazing writers have already explore that, they have publish books and win prizes. So I am not trying to be one of them, I just blog. No books. No prizes. I am not a new Salvador Elizondo. That's impossible.

The things is that many times I am uncertain about what I think I write about. I write about love and my love doesn't react. I write about politics and activists don't react. I write about writing and I get confused. I ask myself "why do I want someone to react?" and then I think "isn't that the reason why we write? to make someone react?" Well, it all depends. And I will not through here a revolutionary theory... I think the french have done a great job explaining us things in regards to writing, authorship, revolutions and kisses.

So I decide to write an ode to uncertainty.

thank you for coming, staying and guiding my life
you have show me not to walk, not to run, not to crawl
with you I can see the future as the present
  I can teach and learn that nothing is everything
  and that the only law that exists is Nature

uncertainty, my friend, stay forever
and forever I will stay
with open heart to face that things I thought I knew
are not anymore
and that things I did not know are again.

Heal our places

"As people work together to heal their places, they also heal themselves." -Sim Van der Ryn Ecological Design

We are already too many. We are enough when we look at us as a unity. Yes, as the 99%.
We are the daughters and sons of something bigger, of more than just a pair of human beings.
We don't seem to notice that we carry with a responsibility towards our unique place in history, in the world.

To think about life can be too much, that's probably why many people prefer only to believe; it is much easier to be a passive actor and just let things happened. Like The Poor, who see death every day walking around their communities, choosing them. She is busy, the dark lady, and it does not looks like she will get holidays any day soon.

We are dying; the we is dying.
And we fight, we work, we think, we change, we heal... ourselves, our places, our own.
Why we don't heal the we, the togetherness from which we evolved?

We need the we to get her some holidays.
We can only win by joining forces with Life to heal ourselves and heal our places.

Soy el destiempo de una vela;
me acurruco en el desvelo
mientras procuro algún tipo de consuelo.

Soy una luz honesta;

Voy a tener respuestas.

Ahora me voy a seguir trabajando.

Gracias.

Me encantan

Ya vimos el eternal sunshine of an spotless mind. ¿estrellas? ¿energía? ¿karma? ¿conexiones intergalácticas?

No puedo decir tampoco qué es verdad y qué no es. Nada es, la diversidad es... ¿cómo vamos a enseñar eso? ¿cómo vamos a enseñar sin prejuicios?

Me sorprendo. Tiempo.

Time is cruel.
The cruelty created.
Is it us who create cruelties?
Is it us who created time as a way to control, limit and avoid?

Time was probably conceived as a good way to organize.
We need to be organized.
Does indian nations see organization as we do in the current industrialized capitalists nations?

I choose to be an indian.
One with wings, with freedom of all kinds and with the responsibilities of being balanced, respectful, connected, touched, by Mother Earth and my fellow indian mates.

I choose to be an indian and enjoy that time is only what we want and decide.
I choose to be an indian women because I can.
I choose to be an indian women mobilizing free minds.

I choose in silence
because I am afraid of judgement.
I choose silence as my tool, my ally, my secret body with whom I'll grow to be the sun.

I choose to be the choice of those who cannot choose.
